baby at play

sitting01

Where there's a baby, there's usually a big sister. He really loves that toy and his sister really loves him, though I'd say the feeling is totally mutual! Oh, and Dean's a sitter now!  Actually he's been sitting for about a month, but was just getting sturdy when these photos were taken.

He still lays around a lot too.  Lazy baby!

happy together

Everybody loves The Turtles, right?!  Right!  Really this is just a post about my kids.  Yea!  Most of the time Avery really loves Dean and just can't get enough of him.  Especially if he's asleep or trying to go to sleep, then she really can't get enough.  As frustrating as that can be, she's ridiculously sweet and as we pry her off of him she says, "I just love Dean sooo much!  I'm so glad he came home from the hospital!  He's so cute!"  Every. Single. Time.  Oh, big sisters!

These are few pics from the last month I've snapped with my phone.  Top to bottom, left to right: 1) She looks miserable but I swear she asked to hold him and then she acted like he knocked her down! 2) Us!  Sitting in the recliner reading books helps us pass the time in the late afternoon. 3) Her usual position, IN HIS FACE. 4) Dean is all, "What?" 5) Sweet sister kisses on a cold morning. 6) Cousins!  Give or take a few hours, Dean is almost exactly 9 weeks younger than his sleepy cousin Drew. 7) Feet in the face make me sad too. For the record, he was crying before she put her foot on his face.  I was trying to take a picture of his sad face to compare it to a sad face of Avery at the same age.  I'm sweet like that. 8) At least Avery is happy! 9) Just another good morning!

dean kyler | 2 months

So I'm a few days behind in posting this, but not because I forgot.  No, I most definitely remembered his two-month birthday!  Really!  I just never got around to posting anything that day and then we had company all weekend and looky here, it's been another whole week!!  Today he is actually TEN weeks old.  At times I feel like he's been here forever and then I think, I JUST HAD A BABY!  Well, ten weeks ago, but still!

Dean actually had his two month check-up on the 7th and it was mostly a happy time, just a little traumatic.  The shots really did a number on him and he was sad the rest of the day.  When he wasn't sleeping, anyway.  The hysterical crying was so out of character for him, it left me feeling a little helpless and I was glad when he woke up much later that evening with a smile.  He weighed in at 13 lbs. 5 oz and measured 22 3/4 inches long.

At two months, Dean looooves...to eat.  That is all.  Not really.  He also loves to sleep!  He started sleeping through the night at eight weeks and I'm so amazed by this!  I'm pretty sure Avery still wouldn't sleep through the night if she weren't in our bed.  But guess what?!  Dean sleeps in his own bed.  AWESOME.  When he first wakes up and he's picked up, his back arches and he curls his legs up like a newborn.  It's so cute and I'll be sad when it stops.

He started smiling (intentionally) a few days into week five and his sweet face brightens our days.  He is starting to talk/coo a lot more and is getting so strong!  He still doesn't love tummy time, but he gets plenty of practice holding his head up as we sit him on our lap or hold him tummy to tummy. In general, he gets a kick out of crazy faces and a few Sandra Boynton books.  I know a few by heart so I just recite them and make crazy faces - double the fun!

He gets lots of love from his sister and tolerates it well.  Maybe all that bouncing around she did on my baby bump did help condition him for life outside the womb! At the rate he's growing he'll be able to hold his own soon enough.

While he is a great sleeper, I've been trying to take a page from Pavlov and do some training in the form of sleep conditioning.  I sing him the same song every afternoon before nap and at night after his bath while I nurse him.  I'm hoping I'll eventually be able to start the first verse and he'll be all, Zzzzzz.  I sing my favorite hymn, Victory in Jesus.  He seems to really like music, though his taste runs more to Mumford & Sons and the like.  No surprise since we played them for him while I was pregnant.  If ever he gets really fussy and I'm mid-task, I grab my phone and turn on some M&S or Avett Brothers to calm him down.  He's got good taste in tunes, that boy of ours.

Two months in and I can honestly say that Dean has brought us nothing but joy.  His birth was such a positive, happy experience and I don't think we could ask for a better baby. I wasn't sure what to expect with the second baby, but I'm happy (and grateful) to say we've been blessed with two fantastic babies.  Sure, his sister is crazy now - but she was a good baby! ;)

Lots going on in the next month, we can't wait to see what's in store for our boy.  No doubt more happy days and peaceful nights!  Should I beating on some wood right now?!  Nah, even if he starts waking up five times a night I won't love him any less.

The monthly iPhone collage, top to bottom and left to right: 1) sleeping/rocking out? 2) feeling stripey 3) early morning smiles 4) sleeping on D, he crossed his hands himself and looked so dadgum cute! 5) happy! 6) playing in sister's room, not very amused 7) another happy morning! 8) sweet boy after a bath, and 9) yet another happy morning!

toesies

Avery loves to pull off Dean's socks and say, "Awww! Look at his cute little toesies!"  She had some pretty cute toesies herself. :)

Today our sweet boy is five weeks old.  I surely do love him and his tiny toes!

celebrating dean | one month later

Soooo I had a baby! A whole MONTH ago today!!  I've been away from technology for most of this month.  It's been days since I checked my email and honestly, it's been nice.  Life with two littles is surprisingly...not that different.  It takes us a little longer to get out the door and of course I'm wearing my favorite old perfume, Eau De Spit Up, but life is really really good!

Dean Kyler joined us at 2:04 p.m. on Friday, December 7, 2013.  He weighed 8 lbs. 1 oz. and was 21.25 inches long.  He has these adorably dimpled chunky hands and they were the first thing I noticed when he was placed on me.  He has a fantastically cute hairline and lots of hair!  His eye color is still to be determined.  At first we thought brown, then they started looking more blue/gray, and sometimes they look green.  No doubt we'll love our boy with whatever color his sweet eyes settle on!  I plan to blog his birth story so I won't share too much now because I have a WHOLE MONTH of news to get through.

Dean loves to be held, is a champion eater, and is a super laid back little guy.  He dislikes dirty diapers and not being picked up immediately when he cries.  He really is low-key and doesn't fuss too often.  Most nights he doesn't even cry when he wakes up to eat, he just starts grunting and sometimes snacks on his hand.  Avery says he sounds like a little pig. :)  She also calls him "little tooter boy" because he can be gassy.  Gotta love being a baby!

I thought he was so little when he was born and the doctor was like, "Mmmmm nope, he's a good size baby!"  He gained 11 ounces between his one-two week check-ups!  I'm sure he is between 10-11 pounds now and has been in size one diapers for about two weeks.  I think drinking my breast milk is the equivalent of slurping down heavy whipping cream, maybe even mixed with butter.  At any rate, he's a healthy boy and that makes me happy!

We started doing tummy time just before three weeks and he doesn't like it.  Not even a little bit.  He actually rolled over once!  But alas, no one was paying attention.  Avery and I were about a foot away reading a book and I looked over to see him on his back and was all, whaaaat?!  He loves his swing and often naps in there during the day.

His umbilical stayed on well into the second week and it was stinky.  I mean, I know it's rotting flesh, but his actually smelled like rotting flesh.  We were ready for his first real bath from about day three. :)  His first bath was a tearful event but he's since learned to tolerate them and no longer cries. Yea!

It's still a little early for the social smiles to start, but I swear just this morning I earned the smile!  I was holding him at the table and reading a book aloud while Avery ate her breakfast.  I started making a funny noise and he smiled.  I mean, it could have been coincidence, but I think not.  I'm pretending it was real even if it wasn't!

We are so happy Dean is finally here and while this last month has passed in a blur, it almost feels like we've had him forever.  He is such a perfect addition to our family and we can't wait to see what next month holds for our boy.  He is such a good baby!!  Avery was a great baby too, I'm thankful we've been doubly blessed!

And now for the monthly iPhone tribute, top to bottom and left to right: 1) A babe is born! 2) Sleeping in his swing, looking super comfy?  I have a similar picture of Avery (look at the last row of September). 3) I love duck themed infant clothing and sleepy baby boys. 4) Little monster 5) World's best little brother, for sure! 6) Yaaaawwwwwn 7) He really has fantastic hair! 8) Oh boy! 9) A sweet baby, sleeping again.  It's kind of what newborns do, ya know!

November 29, 2012

the night my water didn't break

On Tuesday night I was sitting on the couch after dinner and I moved so that I could put my legs up and lay back a bit.  I felt my pants get wet and in the span of a second I was like, "Wait! Is this it?!" but it was strangely cold.  Then I realized I still had Avery's juice box in my lap and she'd taken out the straw.  Apparently my shift had upended the box on my crotch.  Too much information?  Perhaps.  But I'm still pregnant.

November 26, 2012

the most pregnant i've ever been

Though maybe not as pregnant as I'll ever be, tomorrow is a new day and all that.  Avery was born at 37w 2d, so at 38w 1d I'll admit - I'm getting impatient.  Waiting for a baby this time around is really really hard!  With Avery, we knew what her birth date was supposed to be so her early arrival was a nice surprise.  With this boy it's all new and I'm almost to the point I want to just go ahead and schedule a repeat c-section.  Totally not the experience I'm after, but dang.

For the last six weeks I've been measuring about 4 weeks ahead.  Meaning at my last appointment when I was 37w 5d, I measured a whopping 42 weeks.  CRAZY.  I mean, the good news is that I truly don't feel like I would think someone who is 42 weeks would feel, but I am starting to feel HUGE.  And just this week I noticed two stretch marks.  I know, I know - TWO!  But up to this point, though my belly is most definitely stretched it hasn't left any permanent markings this time around.  Nothing too concerning as I never bared my belly to the masses before this baby and I have no plans to start wearing belly shirts after, just an observation this week.  One that has me feeling like it's totally time to have him.

Our boy is in the 70th percentile, by the end of this week he'll be an estimated 8.5 lbs.  I have another ultrasound and appointment scheduled later this week but of course much like last week, I'm hoping I'm holding him by then.  Though with no signs of impending labor, I have my doubts.  I wouldn't say I've reached a point where I'm super uncomfortable as my daily life continues to be active and if anything I'm doing even more in hopes of speeding things along.  I'm just...ready.

So before I get any whinier, I'll go ahead and end with a photo of my weekly progression covering the last several weeks.  And ignore the messy bathroom.  And even the wandering eyes, it's hard to take a picture and look normal!

Happy Monday, Internet!  And I know I totally flaked on the 30 Days of Thanks.  Truly though, I'm so thankful for all the things that make up my life.  I've got a great one, I feel blessed every single day!!

October 19, 2012

things that make me say, really?!

1. Car trouble.

2. The Voice.  While I really like this show, it was hard to get through the back stories of the contestants as each one becomes more tragic than the last.  SERIOUSLY.

3. Me having to start this post over because a certain three year old dropped Perry the Platypus on the mouse and somehow closed blogger.  And then having to start #2 over because a baby Princess Ariel danced on some keys.

4.  Gestational diabetes.  It's not every single day, but sometimes I just really want a donut.  Or to skip a finger prick or four.

5. Being (lovingly?) referred to as "Hamster" for the third time in two days.  Avery says things like, "I'm going to my room, Hamstuh." and "Bring me a book, Hamstuh." and what?!  I'm truly at a loss as to where this originated.  She went through a similar phase recently with guinea pig.

6. A husband who said I can have some slack in November.  OH, YES HE DID.  I informed him I would be taking that slack through January, and I do mean the 31st.

reality check

Below is a photo of me at 32w 3d, but apparently it's also what someone who is 36-37 weeks looks like.  I had an appointment on Tuesday and am scheduled for an ultrasound tomorrow to check his growth and the amniotic fluid. I'll be glad to see him again and hopefully find out all is well!  The midwife did mention that it could partly be due to body fat and I've certainly got plenty of it!  I'm sitting at 16 lbs. gained, not a terrible place to be but further ahead of where I was with Avery.  At any rate, I'm not nearly as concerned with my weight as I am with my boy.

The good news is I only feel 32 weeks, not 37. :)  I feel really good most of the time, like I can still do anything!  Though even at 37 weeks with Avery I managed to organize and clean the laundry room without air conditioning aaaand then the next day I went into labor.  You know, I'm just bragging on how well I handle pregnancy. ;)  Seriously though, besides a few stressful moments I have felt really great and I hope these last few weeks are just as great.

LAST FEW WEEKS.  Yeah, I'm just about to that point.  CRAZY.  The second time around has gone by so incredibly fast!  I'm very much looking forward to having him in my arms and home with us, whether he's teeny tiny or toddler-sized. :)

So I took that picture on the left yesterday to send to my friend Tina (Hey, T!) because a couple of weeks ago she mentioned feeling out of the loop this time around since we're farther apart and she's not seen me in several months.  I sent one then and made sure she knew it best not be circulated on the Internets, but here I am sharing the new one.  Yeah, I totally gave in and took it in my messy bathroom, so awkward taking a picture of myself.  Anyway, she made me feel a little better in that she said I look normal pregnant, not HUGE like I'd apparently described.  But you guys, thanks to my fab second shooter Vanessa, I've seen pictures of myself over the last two weeks at separate weddings and WOW.  In those photos I look like I should have had this boy yesterday!  But no, he has a little time yet.

Deran had a dream last night he was born on 10/21 and we called him Blackjack.  Hilarious, but here's to hoping he stays in until at least 11/21...then we'll discuss the nickname! ;)

realitycheck

My husband is a man of few words...at least when texting.  And a name!  We're pretty certain we're going with Dean.  We like it!

an illustration

28ishweeks

So this is like, a profile shot of me right now.  I'm not sure I emphasized the sway back enough because I feel it like, WHOA.  Y'all, I'm just going to photoshop my face on this drawing and call it done for maternity photos.  I'm serious.

This pregnancy has been so similar to my pregnancy with Avery except that I'm having a boy and time is totally flying by!  Oh, and the back pain.  Oh!  The back pain!  Deran suggested maybe it's the way I'm carrying this boy but I'm pretty sure it's the way I'm carrying his sister. ;)  First time pregnant women, make a note of this and rejoice in the random naps and sitting whenever you want.  IT WILL NOT HAPPEN AGAIN.  The end.

Really though, aside from a few aches and pains this time is just passing so quickly and I know I have Avery to thank for that.  She keeps us so busy and active, I don't have time to fret or analyze every little thing that happens with my body.  This can be good and bad, but mostly good.  Avery has been laying on me a couple of times when the boy has been especially active and ever since she will randomly put a hand somewhere on me and tell me that baby brother is kicking her. :)  She also says sometimes he cries in there.  I'm not sure why she thinks this.  Sometimes I give him a voice and tell her that he wants her to stop sitting on his head or bouncing on him, etc.  And yeah, she does sit on his head because he's breech too.  It's just how I grow 'em!

I have another ultrasound next week to check his growth and hopefully get a profile shot, something they've tried unsuccessfully to get the last two appointments.  I don't mind so much because it's always fun to see your baby, right?!  Right.  It really is and last time his little baby face looked soooo cute!!  We'll also be able to see if he's still right-side up or upside down.  I've held on to the hope of avoiding another c-section and yet accepting of the fact that it may be my fate.  Either way, I just want a healthy delivery for both of us.  There is comfort in knowing what to expect with that.  Mostly I try not to think of the birth so much as just the afterward - meeting my baby boy, celebrating being home, living life.   There's a peace in glossing over the not-so-nice bits. :)

Lots coming up on the blog next week, I hope everyone has a great weekend and happy start to this fabulous fall!

August 21, 2012

24 weeks and counting

So this pregnancy is moving along fairly quickly.  When I think 24 weeks, I think I have all the time in the world to get things done...but then I think it's only 13-16 weeks until he's here and HOLY COW! do I still have a lot I want to do.  It's all in how those weeks are worded. :)

I still feel really great for the most part, though I'm just starting to get some hip/leg pains and my back hurts if I do a lot of lifting/moving/etc.  So pretty much it hurts a little each day. :)  Avery continues to be a great distraction, she keeps us busy so I savor the moments of rest even more.  She talks all the time about her baby brother and is always talking about things she did (or thinks she did) as a baby and asks us if we "member that?"

Today I went to get the laundry out of the bathroom but instead laid down on the bed for a minute.  Our boy was really moving so I called to Avery to see if she wanted to come feel her baby brother.  "Of course!" she replied and then came walking into the room asking me what she needed to do.  I told her to put her hand on my belly to feel him. She looked at me and then turned around and walked out, calling over her shoulder all exasperated, "Come with me.  Come clean off the table so I can play with my prize!"  Naturally an unopened birthday box of play dough is much more interesting.  Oh my Avery Kate, life will never be the same and you don't even realize it.

She still wants to share everything we've bought for little brother.  She claims she will teach him all kinds of things and she will share her toys, though sometimes I have my doubts on that last one. I'm super excited for Christmas this year for so many reasons, but mainly because we'll be a family of four!

Next week is the dreaded glucose test, yuck.  But I'm actually looking forward to the appointment because we get another ultrasound since he wasn't too cooperative last time.  Yea! :)

July 31, 2012

the boy with no name

I mean, I think the title sums it up.  We're having a BOY!  And we haven't picked a name!  Yea for little brothers!!

We've actually known for over a week, since the day we left for our week at the seashore.  We stopped by a 3D/4D office for a gender reveal but kept it a secret from family and friends.  Then today we went for the big ultrasound and our boy was very uncooperative.  I don't blame him, the appointment was at 8:00 a.m. and we all had a late night.  So technically the gender was not revealed today...and unfortunately all of the measurements weren't able to be done either.  The good news is we get to see him again in four weeks at the next appointment!  High five for snuggly babies who don't want to move!  His spine looked real good. :)

I wanted to continue keeping it a secret but my husband said no.  Whatever.  Sometimes it's fun to keep secrets!  I'm glad we went last week, I would have been disappointed to have to wait another FOUR weeks to find out.

The tech at the gender reveal said 100% boy so unless there was some crazy umbilical placement, I think it's safe to start shopping for blue.  We're really excited, there have been so many similarities to my pregnancy with Avery I really had no idea what gender to expect and willed myself to remain neutral until we found out.   Turns out I'm just awesome at pregnancy.  Just kidding...mostly.  I haven't been sick at all and with the exception of wanting to sleep through the first 13 weeks, I generally feel good.

He Who Shall Remain Nameless (well, eventually he'll have a name) is currently weighing around one pound and has a pretty cute profile.  The photo below is from last week, when he wasn't all nestled into me hiding from the technician.
